Someone writes about “Narcissistic” people. She wants to know whether or not it is some sort of psychiatric disorder.
It’s a disorder, for sure! But you can drop the qualifying adjective.
It’s a disorder of all human beings since the fall. We are all born self-centered. Self-focused. Self-consumed. That’s why the sum of the law is to love God, and love one’s neighbor as one’s self!
The reason that some people are labeled by the psychiatric crowd (other than to add another item to the DSM for treatment purposes—which, interpreted, means financial purposes) is because they are blatantly self-oriented in one way or another.
Christ alone can take the self-focus from us. Though it never ceases in this life since we are still sinners, inordinate self-concern will be reduced increasingly as one focuses his love and attention upon Christ and His work.
